This Kilim was created purely by needle work by the Azara tribe in their village near central Afghanistan. Unlike rugs and Kilims made in cities, where rugs are stitched following a strict pattern sheet, tribal rug makers enjoy more creative freedom as they weave. The weavers develop the patterns as they go, based on the designs and motifs that have been used by generations before them, but then they add their own touches, thereby making each rug and Kilim entirely unique.
